LECTURE
( Task 2 Brief )
Visual Analysis
- Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy.
- Practising visual analysis sharpens critical judgment skills and helps people seek out answers instead of passively receiving information.
HOW DOES VISUAL ANALYSIS WORK?
- Observation
- Analysis
- Interpretation
Observation
- Closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design.
- Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
- Looking, thinking and finding good language to communicate what you notice.
Analysis
- Think about your observations and try to make statements about the work.
- Combine to create design principles that complete that work of design / art.
Interpretation
- Your observations, description and analysis of the work are fused with facts.
- What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created?

Figure 1.1 Goal 5 Artwork - Yo Mama by Wangechi Mutu |
Title of art : Yo Mama

Design Principles that observed in the artwork :
Contrast (woman, snake)
Emphasis (woman, snake)
Balance (Asymmetric, Rule of Thirds)
Harmony & Unity (the repetition of design)
Repetition (dots, tree and sun)
Movement (wave, snake)
Phase 1 : Observation
The way Yo Mama presented this artwork is a landscape format which gives a stunning vibe to the viewers. Throughout the artwork, the main character of the woman is holding the snake and also expressing the power of it. Coming to the visual elements, the artwork mostly used pastel color especially pink expressing the stereotype of women with soft and no lethality. The composition also has diversification by using some wavy and rounded elements applied to it. The extension of the snake tail also allows viewers to notice the detail part and be more coherent in the design.

Phase 2 : Analysis
The design is asymmetrically balanced and follows the rule of thirds. The emphasis appears on the woman's body and the snake’s blood by utilizing contrasting elements such as the color and the texture. It attracts viewers to the specific aspect which is the main character of the artwork. The contrast of the color and shapes also incites the viewer's curiosity and creates interest to let viewers want to know more about the implications of the artwork. The wavy line (movement) presents the artwork to become more vivid and the snake’s curly body also leads viewers' eyes to the women. The repetition of the dots is mainly full of the woman’s body and also repeated on the tree and the sun at the back. There is also harmony and unity inside of the artwork by using the same repetition elements and making it the same style.

Title of art : Riding Death in My Sleep
Artist name : Wangechi Mutu
Year : 2002
Size : 152.4cm x 111.8cm
Medium : Drawing, collage or other work on paper
Wangechi Mutu advocated feminism in these 3 artworks. She usually expresses fragmentation and deconstruction in her artworks, using these two techniques in her compositions to create a sense of confusion and fragmentation. These techniques express complicated themes about self-awareness and the experience of being a human. Thus, the bold colors and patterns create a visually engaging composition in her artwork. She also combines hybrid figures in her artwork such as humans, animals, and natural elements. These figures are not shown in a beautiful traditional sense but they are challenging beauty and identity standards. This also reflects the artist's emphasis the gender, race and culture problems.

FEEDBACK
Week 4 : Not attending class, went on Osaka school trip.
Week 5 : Phase 3 can add more about the similarity of these 3 artworks in the visual part and find out the keyword to describe it. Too much on the art style part can focus more on the visual one. The image of the artwork can be adjusted a bit bigger.
REFLECTION
Task 2 we get to know more about design principles because we utilize them with our own visual analysis (observation, analysis and interpretation). We also get to express the meaning of the elements by relating them to the design principles. In this task, I also learn to observe the artwork detailing instead of just looking at it at first sight. I observe that the artist - Wangechi Mutu has a lot of things that she wants to express in her artwork, she also advocates gender equality in the way she does. I felt learning more in task 2 by putting into practice from what I had learned. Task 2 is also quite interesting for me to explore the artist's artwork and smoothly get into my final task.
FURTHER READING
For this further reading, I chose the topic of repetition as my main research because I think repetition affects a lot in the other design principles.
The article elaborates further on the design principle of repetition, emphasizing its role in creating cohesive and visually appealing designs. It defines repetition as the recurrence of elements like shapes or colors, stressing its ability to establish consistency, reinforce branding, and guide the viewer's eye. Examples from various design mediums illustrate how repetition enhances visual communication and user experience. The article emphasizes the need to balance repetition with variation to maintain interest and avoid monotony. Overall, repetition is highlighted as a fundamental design principle crucial for effective visual communication.
