LECTURE
Task 3 Brief
For this task, we need to create our own artwork to reflect the chosen UNSDG goal and apply the design principles to it. Task 3 we need to do a simple explanation of each sketch and the sketches need to be inspired by the chosen visual analysis artwork. Thus, the final artwork should include a rationale of the concept and the design principles used in the artwork. The medium of our design work can be physical or digital, but direct use of photographs is not permitted.

Figure 1.2 Sketches

Sketch 1 (From left to right): The first sketch is to reflect women being bound within the confines of marriage. Showing the restrictions and limitations of being a married woman in this society. The picture above shows that the woman is suffering from the pain of the harm of marriage.  Marriage is sometimes like a sharp tone that can hurt you so I use the hook to express it.

Sketch 2: The second sketch I want to encourage women to do regardless of others’ opinions. The butterfly represents a freedom woman but it is broken because she always cares about society's expectations and opinions. Losing confidence and being scared to be the true self. The background I use is full of flowers and seems beautiful and nice but it's totally different from the reality of society.

Sketch 3: The third sketch I drew is a chess game with two chess pieces. I used the chess pieces and changed the top to a man's face and a woman's face to show the competition and challenges of society. Chess games will never come to fair results or a win-win situation and show the exact situation in nowadays society.

I chose Sketch 1 as my final artwork but I have also made a few changes to it after consulting Mr. Zeon.
In the first sketch, I was also inspired by the curvy vibe of Wangechi Mutu's artwork : Yomama.

Final Artwork: Breaking Chains

Title : Breaking Chains
Size : A4 size (21cm x 29.7cm)

Design Principles :
Emphasis
Balance (Asymmetric)
Repetition
Movement
Unity
Word and Image

Rationale
My final task is referred to the UNSDG Goal 5: Gender Equality and my concept of the artwork is related to married women. The hook clasping onto the woman's mouth symbolizes women being bound and hurt within marriage. The woman also looks at the words showing her inner voice that she wants to break the bondage. She endured the pain of representing the silence of female voices within traditional gender roles. I will want to encourage females to break the social restrictions and increase women's empowerment. The unfairness to women should be solved and we also need to raise awareness of it.

Some of the design principles in my work:

Emphasizing ‘Breaking chains’, the topic that I want to show so I used a different red to stand out. The ring as well, I added the diamond on the closest ring to the woman. I also use asymmetric balance in the work. Thus, the repetition of the ring creates an active vibe, the curving rope of the hook also enriches the movement to make it look more vivid and moving. The repetition makes my artwork look more unity and I also add on the words to convey the message.

(199 words)

FEEDBACK
Week 6 : The sketch is a bit empty and not rich enough so Mr. Zeon recommended I add some of the words that I want to express and the hook can be created by the words also.
Week 7 : My character was looking at the right side so Mr. Zeon suggested I move my character left a bit and let my words 'Breaking chains' at the right side, create the feeling that the character is looking at the words.

REFLECTION
The final task was a bit difficult for me as the process was starting to do the design part. We need to expand our creativity to draw 3 sketches. I also used 2 software programs Sketchbook and Adobe Illustrator to complete the final task. I have some difficulties when I draw the character's face in Sketchbook because I'm not really familiar with using this software but after I practice sometimes I can smoothly draw it. Mr. Zeon also helps a lot by giving us feedback on some detailed parts to make it more interesting and rich in the visuals. Task 3 is also interesting for me when we apply the design principles and realize the changes that can made. Overall I’m quite satisfied with the final result and learned a lot in this module.

FURTHER READING
The further reading I chose is the article on gender equality and women empowerment. I want to have more knowledge in this area to make a better creation in my work.
While exploring this topic of gender equality and women's empowerment, I was reminded again of the importance of equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender, race, and religion. This kind of education plays a really important role in creating a more equitable and harmonious world. This article has also inspired me to follow up on this issue and encouraged me to take action to support gender equality in society.
