Assignment : Digital Triptych - Exploring Scott McCloud's Transitions

LECTURE
The objective of this assignment is to apply Scott McCloud's theory on transitions to create a digital triptych, comprising three panels: one before, one during (climactic turning point), and one after a significant event. Each panel will represent a different transition type from McCloud's theory.

Referencing Scott McCloud's analysis of transitions in "Understanding Comics," you will select one panel before and one panel after the climactic turning point, surrounding a panel representing the turning point itself. Each panel will exemplify a different transition type, creating a digital triptych that showcases various narrative transitions.
  • Review Scott McCloud's transitions: moment-to-moment, action-to-action, subject-to-subject, scene-to-scene, aspect-to-aspect.
  • Select one transition type for each of the three panels: before, during (climactic turning point), and after the turning point.
  • Identify specific moments or elements in the narrative that align with the chosen transitions.
  • Create a digital triptych with three panels that clearly illustrate the chosen transitions.
  • Use any digital medium (illustration software, graphic design tools, etc.) to craft the panels.
  • Ensure coherence and narrative flow between the panels, capturing the essence of the transitions selected.
  • Submit the completed digital triptych via the designated platform.
  • Include a brief explanation for each panel, detailing the chosen transition and its significance in the narrative context.
  • Ensure that each panel distinctly represents its respective transition type.
  • Understanding and application of Scott McCloud's theory on transitions in creating the digital triptych.
  • Clarity and effectiveness in using each transition to depict the sequential narrative.
  • Coherence and visual storytelling across the three panels.
  • Artistic execution and presentation of the digital triptych.

Submission deadline for the completed digital triptych is at the end of Week 11.

This assignment contributes 20% towards your final grade. Grading will consider adherence to instructions, effective application of transitions, narrative coherence, and artistic presentation within the digital triptych.

5 Types of Transitions
1.Moment to moment
2.Action to action
3.Subject to subject
4.scene to scene
5.aspect to aspect

We are required to choose one within these 5 types of transitions to do our digital triptych assignment. Select on of these then we are required to do two more Illustrator work so that means we have 3 total scene of it which are before, during (climactic turning point), and after the turning point.

I decided to do scene to scene as my final transition and for the assignment we still need to use the same artstyle which is art deco so I had applied some grain effect on my final artwork.

Work Description
Panel 1: The 'before' scene depicts the married couple unexpectedly discovering that the wall sounds different from the others. They peel off the wallpaper and find a hidden room behind the wall, and the door automatically opens.

Panel 2: The climactic point occurs when they enter the room and find messages written on the wall with a red crayon, along with a child's handprint. The room is filled with a creepy atmosphere.

Panel 3: The 'after' scene aims to capture the eerie and horror atmosphere of the house and convey that the couple quickly moves out, leaving the house with 'no one' again.

This is my ideal layout, which consists of one A4 vertical size on the left and two A4 horizontal sizes on the right.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The climactic point was a pivotal moment in my design journey. Navigating through Illustrator's features allowed me to bring the narrative to life. I carefully crafted the scene where the characters ventured into the mysterious room, uncovering red crayon messages on the walls. The challenge lay in capturing suspense and tension visually, making the viewer feel the climactic revelation through digital brushstrokes and the color palette.

Before delving into the climactic point, the 'before' scene required attention to detail. Constructing the moment when the couple stumbles upon the hidden room demanded precision in illustrating the surroundings. I use the view through the cracks to convey the atmosphere effectively, including the subtle lighting.

As the narrative unfolded, transitioning to the 'after' scene brought its own set of considerations. Capturing the creepy essence of the house while conveying the urgency of the couple's departure demanded a delicate balance. Creating an image that reflected the eerie atmosphere was the final challenge in this design narrative.

REFLECTION
Throughout this project, I not only honed my technical skills but also deepened my appreciation for storytelling through visual elements. The iterative process of refining details, adjusting compositions, and experimenting with different styles enriched my understanding of design.

In conclusion, these few weeks provided an immersive experience in translating narrative elements into visual storytelling. Although that I had struggle a lot with this project and also facing a lot of problem in brainstorming but the journey of it leaving me with newfound skills and a sense of accomplishment in the realm of digital illustration.
