Task 3 -Type Design and Communication
For this task, we must prepare 3 graphic papers and 3 marker pens (must be 3.0 above). We have to sketch the following letters (ODHNG / odhng) provided by Mr.Vinod using the 3 pens. We need to explore 3 different writing styles for each of the pens.

Dissection of the Letters (H o g b)
We need to select a preferred font from the 10 fonts provided and use the letters (H o g b) to do a detail dissection of it.
Figure 1.1 (H o g b) provided by Mr. Vinod

Futura Std-Heavy
Figure 1.2 (H o g b) Futura Std - Heavy (Week 8) 16/11/2023
Observations
Letter 'H' : The structure of the font has stroke widths. Two vertical stems are in the same width and height. The horizontal crossbar is thinner than the two stems.
Letter 'o' : 'o' features a gentle curve, giving it a rounded appearance but the inner line will be slightly thinner than the outline.
Letter 'g' : The inner line 'g' is the same as the inner line 'o', but the 'g' upper outline is smaller than the outline of the letter 'o'. The tail curls around in a loop.
Letter 'b' : Has a straight vertical stem. The rounded bowl at the top contributes to the same outline as the upper letter 'g'. The inner line 'b' is the same as the inner line 'o' too.

My preferred sketch is (7) and after getting feedback from Mr.Vinod, he suggested me to do some changes to the letter 'D' because it's not integrated with the other fonts so I revised it.

Figure 1.6 Fonts Design Sketches 04 (Week 9) 23/11/2023

Then we had to write all the letters (o l e d s n c h t i g , . #) in the approved style and start digitising it and I also decided to write my letter in lowercase.

Digitisation

First Attempt
I use the rectangle shape tool to create my letters and set the guidelines which are the ascender line, cap height, x-height, baseline and the descender line.

Figure 1.10 First attempt at digitisation (Outlines) (Week 10) 28/11/2023

Mr.Vinod corrected my mistakes with the exclamation mark and hashtag should be at the baseline and the comma should watch the video that he provided.

Second Attempt
I revised the letters by adding a slight curvature to the outline and look less rigid. I changed the style of the hashtag and comma. Besides, I also adjusted the exclamation mark and hashtag on the baseline.

To make it a compound shape, I used the pathfinder and clicked to unite the shape as one.

Punctuation (comma)

I changed the style of the comma in every attempt and finalized it with the third one.

Figure 1.20 Measurements checking (Week 11) 07/12/2023
Make sure the letters fit the guidelines and have consistent horizontal and vertical lines and punctuation sizes. Ensure the shapes are in the same radian.

Descender Line : -180pt

Font Lab
After finishing the font design in Illustrator, we can import our font to FontLab 7. Make sure that the font perfectly fits the guidelines and the shapes look great.

I also adjusted the kerning of the letters.

Poster
I designed 3 kinds of posters with the word (oledsnchtig,.!#) and using the same point size.
My phrase : golden nights echo in silence
I choose the second design as my final task 3 poster.

FEEDBACK
Week 8 : Independent Learning Week

Week 9
Specific Feedback : The letter 'D' needs to be revised because it's not integrated with the other fonts.

Week 10
Specific Feedback : The exclamation mark and hashtag should be at the baseline and the design of the comma is not right.

Week 11
General Feedback : Make sure the results are the most satisfactory and take care of the measurements when importing them to FontLab 7.

Week 12
General Feedback : Look at other people's work and get to know other people's idea and the good parts that we can learn from.
Specific Feedback : The poster words have to be in the same font size and all the letters (oledsnchtig) should be used in the phrase.

REFLECTIONS
Experience : Designing my own fonts is really interesting and fun but at the same time there are a lot of detail things that we need to be aware of. Accomplishing it with my font 'Han's - Regular' is very satisfying when I see the actual font come out in my Adobe Illustrator and make it as a poster. I really enjoyed the process of designing the font.

Observation : Creating a font is actually quite difficult and it's a long process of work. From designing the font and importing it to FontLab 7 always need to take care of the detailed part. Ensure the font consistency and make sure that have followed the rules in creating letters and punctuation.

Findings : I found out that creating a font involved exploring shapes and spaces,  balancing consistency with uniqueness. Every feedback also played a key role in improving the design. This task not only taught me how to design a font but also made it an insightful and enjoyable journey.

FURTHER READING

Figure 3.1 Typographic Design : Form and Communication
This week I chose Typographic Design : Form and Communication as my further reading book. I read the second chapter called ''The Anatomy of Typography''.

Figure 3.3 Shapes
The basic shape of each capital letter can be extracted from the structure in this.

Figure 3.4 The parts of letterforms
Capline : An imaginary line that runs along the tops of capital letters and the ascenders of lowercase letters.
Meanline : An imaginary line that establishes the height of the body of lowercase letters.
x-height : The distance from the baseline to the meanline. Typically, this is the height of lowercase letters and is most easily measured on the lowercase x.
Baseline : An imaginary line upon which the base of each capital rests.
Beard line : An imaginary line that runs along the bottoms of descenders.

Contrasts in stroke weight - A change in the contrast between thic and thin strokes can alter the optical qualities of letterforms.
